Last week, markers around the country began marking the final examination scripts for the grade 12 class of 2021. Markers are still in the process of marking exam scripts, despite the threat of the Omicron variant.

More than 41 500 markers were appointed to mark the scripts at 193 centers located in South Africa’s 9 provinces. The marking will take place at 193 centers.

A total of 897 786 candidates participated in the 2021 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The Director-General of the DBE, Mathanzima Mweli visited a number of schools this past weekend to address markers. He thanked them for the sacrifices they are making in order to mark examination scripts. This is as the country grapples with a fourth wave of Covid-19 infections.

Mweli also pleaded with the markers to adhere to the Covid-19 protocols that were put in place to ensure the marking can be done in a safe manner.

He said, “ Brothers and sisters, I plead with you, I beg you that you insist that everyone within this precinct must adhere to health and safety protocols”.

He explained that despite the protection that vaccination against Covid-19 provides, people must not become complacent. He said, “You have vaccinated but it does not mean that you’ve got a cure or you are immune to the infection of Covid-19. This virus is mutating into different variants, the latest you know, Omicron, spreads like wildfire”.

The DBE says they are working closely with the department of health to ensure that the marking is completed in a safe manner.

They said, ‘All marking centers are implementing stringent Covid-19 protocols including daily screening, the appointment of compliance officers, the supply of masks, sanitising stations as well as social distancing’.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga is expected to announce the results on 20 January 2022 and learners will receive their individual results on 21 January 2022.
