South Africa’s latest batch of matriculants officially sat their exams on 31 October 2022, writing their last paper on 7 December.

About 923,460 students comprising full-time and part-time students registered for the 2022 matric examinations a 3% increase over 2021’s participants. A team of 52,811 markers began marking the November 2022 National Senior Certificate examinations on 10 December. Marking concluded on 20 December.

The evening of Thursday, 19 January 2023, sees the Minister of the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Angie Motshekga, announce the 2022 matric results for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. The national Matric pass rate for 2022 achieved is 80.1%. This is a 3.7% improvement since last year with a 4.1% increase in Bachelor passes.

The matric pass rates for each province are as follows:

  • Western Cape: 81.4%
  • Gauteng: 84.4%
  • Limpopo: 72.1%
  • Eastern Cape: 77.3%
  • Kwazulu-Natal: 83%
  • North West: 79.8%
  • Northern Cape: 74.2%
  • Mpumalanga: 76.8%
  • Free State: 88.5%

19 January 2023 – Minister to announce the results of the Class of 2022
20 January 2023 – Statement of results available at exam centres/schools
3 February 2023 – Last day to apply for remarking/rechecking of examination scripts
8 February 2023 – Last day to register for the 2023 May/June examinations
15 March 2023 – Last day to register for the 2023 October/November examinations

How to Check Matric Results 2022 / 2023

The Matric Results can be accessed using different methods. This includes checking 2022 Matric Results Online, through Newspaper, High School and Cell phone methods. Each of these methods is explained respectively in the following section.

Matric Results have been successfully uploaded online, follow the below steps to check your result:

Check Matric Results via Department of Basic Education Website:

Matric partial results will be released on the DBE website on Friday, 20 January 2023.

Learners must navigate to the DBE website and provide their details, including their ID number, exam number, and email address.

Things to Note about Department of Basic Education Result Website:

  • The DBE website is zero-rated, which means it can be accessed whether you have data or not.
  • The results reflected on the website are the results of the 2020 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.
  • The Statement of Results is available at the school/exam centre where the candidate wrote.
  • Some candidate’s results may be excluded from the results published on the website because of technical reasons. If a candidate’s results do not show, kindly visit the school/exam centre where you wrote.
  • The Department of Basic Education reserves the right to change any of the information published on the website.
  • If you attended a public/government school, then your results will definitely be available on this site.

News24 uses DBE and Independent Examinations Board (IEB) data to provide learners with their matric results.

Students can access their results by entering their school name or examination number on the publisher’s matric portal. The portal also provides context on matric pass rates over the last five years.

SABC Education’s MatricsMate app for Android and iOS

SABC Education, in partnership with the DBE, developed the MatricMate app to make matric results more accessible to learners.

The app is available for iOS and Android. It also provides users with information on opportunities to take their studies further.

  • Enter your 13 digit ID number and examination number.
  • You will then be able to view the matric results as soon as they are available.

Sowetan Live Matric Portal

Sowetan Live also works with the DBE and IEB to help make matric results more accessible to learners.

Students can register in advance to get their results as they are released or enter their matric number or school name on the portal once the results are available.

  • Complete the registration by filling in your details on the page.
  • Click submit.
  • You will be notified when your matric result is available.

  • The department says that the GPG Matric App allows you to access your results using your smartphone or any device with internet access as soon as the results are released.

Your High School

You can check your Matric 2022 Results at your High School.

  • A day after the initial results are released, your school will give you your results.
  • Note: This is not the official matric certificate, it’s just your results for each subject.
  • You will be able to obtain your official matric certificate once it has been printed in full.

Matric Results on Newspaper

Your results will be published in the National Newspapers on the result release date. It will be in all of the big Newspaper brands, like The RapportThe Argus and The Star.

Remember it will not be your full results. It will just state whether or not you passed and with what symbol you passed – B for Bachelors PassD for Diploma, etc.

Get Results via SMS or USSD

Phone SMS

You can use your cell phone (or someone else’s) to receive your results. SABC Education and the Department of Basic Education have provided a service that allows you to get an SMS with your results. You can register and have your results sent to you as soon as they are released.

  • Register via SMS
    • Send your exam number to 35658
    • You’ll get a confirmation SMS once you’ve successfully registered.
    • Answer a few multiple-choice questions.
    • Get your matric results immediately when they are released
  • Use the USSD service
    • Register using the USSD code *120*35658#
    • Answer a few multiple questions
    • Enter your ID number
    • You will get your matric results per subject
    • USSD rates apply

You will pay between R1.50 to R3 per SMS, while the USSD cost per minute varies based on your cellular provider.

You can also go old school by phoning to access your matric results. Beware that lots of matric students will be phoning to find out their results so you might wait for quite a while to get your results.
