How to Participate in the 2022 NSMCC :

Step 1 :

** Each School must select a Team of 2 learners. Preferably one male and one female – however this is only a preferance, not a requirement.

Step 2 :

** Download the competition material (Hypothetical Fact, Resource Pack & Competition Rules)

** Futher, you can download the“Essay Writing Guide”and the“Oral Pleading Guide”to assist with your preperations.

Step 3 :

** Team members must write one essay for the Applicant and one essay for the Respondent.

** In total, teams must write 2 essays. Submit both essays before the submission deadline (28 July 2022 at 5pm).

** Teams can submit essays to schoolsmoot AT up.ac.za

Step 4 :

** Top 10 Teams that wrote the best essays in each Province (based on the essay results) will be invited to participate in the Provincial Oral Rounds taking place between 19 August and 2 September 2022 (please note that the Provincial Oral Rounds are organised by the Provincial DbE and DoJ).

** The Judges from the Provincial Oral Rounds will select the best 4 teams from each Province. Those teams will advance to the National Oral Round in Pretoria/Johannesburg hosted from 4 to 8 October 2022. (Please refer to the 2022 Official Rules for rules)

** In Pretoria, 4 best teams from each province will compete against each other through Preliminary, Quarter Final, Semi-Final and the Final Round. The Grand Final Oral Round will be hosted in the Constitutional Court on the 8th of October 2022.

1.1. Eligibility :

1.1.1. Participation in the National Rounds of the NSMCC is open to a maximum of 4 teams from each province selected or determined by the Department of Basic Education and/or the Department of Justice.

1.1.2. Only grade 10 and 11 learners from all secondary schools in the nine provinces of South Africa are eligible participate.

1.1.3. Learners who have participated in a previous Schools Moot Court edition will not be allowed to participate in the National Rounds

1.2. Team Composition :

1.2.1. A team consists of two members from a single school. A team member or members who cannot compete due to circumstances beyond their control may be substituted at the discretion of the Competition Organisers.

1.3. Team Selection Process

1.3.1. Team Members may be chosen by any method approved by the responsible authority within the school.

3. Hypothetical problem to be argued :

3.1. The Official Hypothetical Case is the case posted on the schools moot website. Presentation or Essay based on any other version of this case will not be accepted.

4. Submission of Memorials and Registration of Teams :

4.1. Each Team participating in the Competition must collectively prepare one Applicant and one Respondent Essay. Each Team must submit its Applicant and Respondent Memorials to the University of Pretoria via email (schoolsmoot@up.ac.za).

4.2. Essays must be submitted on or before 5pm on the 28 July 2022. Essays submitted after this date and time will be subject to penalties or disqualification.
