SA Transport Roadworthiness Certificate

You must have your motor vehicle tested for roadworthiness before you register it in your name.

If your motor vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy-load vehicle (excluding buses), you must take it to be tested for roadworthiness every year before you renew the motor vehicle licence. A bus must be tested for roadworthiness every six months.

It is your responsibility as the owner of a vehicle to have your vehicle tested. You can take it to a private or public vehicle testing station.

At the end of the roadworthy test, if passed, a notice is issued.

What You Should Do?

Go to the nearest vehicle testing station with the following

** vehicle’s registration certificate

** identity document (ID)

** prescribed fee.

Complete the Application for certification of roadworthiness (ACR) form.

Temporary/ Special Motor Vehicle Permit

About temporary or special motor vehicle permit :

A temporary motor vehicle permit is valid for 21 days and is used for a motor vehicle that is registered, licenced and roadworthy.

A temporary permit is used under the following circumstances:

** Delivering the vehicle within the Republic to the owner,

** Delivering the vehicle within the Republic by or to a motor dealer, or

** Registering and licensing purposes

** Only one permit is issued per vehicle ownership.

A special motor vehicle permit is valid for three days only.

A special motor vehicle permit is used under the following circumstances :

** Testing such motor vehicle;

** Proceeding to or returning from a place within the Republic where repairs are to be or have been effected to such motor vehicle;

** Reaching an examiner of vehicles or mass measuring apparatus; or

** Repossessing such motor vehicle as contemplated in regulation 69

It is important to note that a vehicle with a special permit may not carry goods or passengers. There is no limit to the number of permits that can be issued per ownership.

** the prescribed fee.

Complete an Application for a Temporary/Special Permit (TSP1) form.
