Though IEB students were faced with the challenges and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, they were able to achieve a 98.07% pass rate which was just a slight drop in comparison to the 98.82% pass rate in 2019.

Chief of the IEB, Anne Oberholzer was pleased with these 2020 results.

“The excellent performance of the Class of 2020, under very difficult circumstances, underscores the importance of the years of good, solid teaching and learning prior to the Grade 12 year. These achievements are proof that the Grade 12 year on its own does not provide the understanding, perseverance and resilience needed to achieve excellent results in the matric year, but that [it] is the culmination of work and learning over 12 or 13 years of quality schooling,” she said.

The focus will now be placed on the 2022 IEB matric students to see if they can maintain these impressive results.

Due to the many disruptions to schooling caused by Covid-19 in 2022, IEB schooling institutions removed the June exams which only left two sets of exams for students to write; Prelims and Finals.

These schools have also had to change and adapt curriculums to ensure that students finish all the necessary content before their final exams commence.
