Which Postgraduate Qualifications Does NSFAS Fund?

NSFAS provides fully subsidised free higher education and training for poor and working class South Africans. Here are the postgraduate qualifications they will fund.

NSFAS does not necessarily fund a wide range of postgraduate qualifications. They only fund the following:

  • Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA)

If you’re studying towards a postgraduate degree which was not mentioned above, you are advised to apply for funding through the National Research Foundation (NRF). For more information on NRF, click here.

NSFAS provides financial assistance in the form of bursaries to eligible students at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

NSFAS will cover your tuition fees, accommodation fees as well as give you transport, living and book allowances to make sure that your higher education is covered far beyond what you expect.

If you’ve applied to be funded through NSFAS but you haven’t received any word on whether you’ve been approved for NSFAS yet, it will be communicated soon but you can check your application status by logging into your myNSFAS account and track your application progress. Here you will receive more information on which stage your application is at.

Once approved for the bursary, the only requirement to stay funded is that students need to pass their modules. However, NSFAS does give grace in case something happens and allows students to fail one year and still be funded.
