How To Renew Drivers Licence In Kwazulu-Natal?
Your credit card type driver’s licence is valid for five years only counting from the date of issue and needs to be renewed after this time. Although the expiry date appears on your licence, You may renew your licence at any time before it expires. The new licence will be valid for five years from the date of renewal.
To renew your licence, you need to complete the relevant application form, DL1, at your nearest Drivers Licence Testing Centre in KwaZulu-Natal. You may renew at any Driver’s License Testing Centre in the country, but you will also have to collect your card there.

Documents Required For Drivers Licence Renewal
Produce acceptable identification (ID Document or Passport as well as a certified copy thereof) as defined by legislation (as of 1 November 2015, Road Traffic legislation viz. Regulation 32A to the National Road Traffic Act, 93 of 1996 compels a person or body of persons to provide documentary proof of their full names, Identity Numbers/Business Registration, Residential and Postal Addresses, as promulgated in Government Gazette 38142);.
ID sized photographs (N.B. For a normal renewal you need to provide one photograph, but if you also need a temporary drivers licence then two photographs are a requirement in terms of the National Road Traffic Act, 93 of 1996.) If a temporary licence is required the applicant is issued with a temporary driver’s licence, which is valid for six months. Additionally, the applicant needs to provide proof of residence.
The following documents are acceptable:
Any utility account, for example, Electricity account, municipal account or other utility account; In the case where the utility account is not in the name of the owner, the person in whose name the utility account is issued must make an affidavit declaring that the owner resides at the address and the affidavit must be accompanied by the utility account of such a person.
Other Acceptable Documents Are:
A bank statement; A recent lease or rental agreement; Municipal rates and taxes invoice; Telephone or cellular account; Valid TV licence; Recent long term or short term insurance policy document issued by an insurance company; A statement of account issued by a retail store.
In the case of a person who resides at an informal settlement or rural area:
** A letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming the postal and residential address;
** A letter from the local tribal authority confirming the postal and residential address
The above documents must be either an original document or a certified copy thereof and must not be older than 3 months.
Note:
That you will not be required to take a driver’s licence examination. However, you will have to undergo an eye test. N.B. Due to COVID you will be required to bring an eye test from an optometrist. If it is found that your sight conditions have deteriorated from the date of the last issue, new conditions will be attached to your licence.
