The South African State Theatre (SAST), situated in the Tshwane central business district, is one of the largest theatres in Africa. Accordingly, the theatre’s vision is to be the prestigious theatre of choice for a distinctly Pan-African experience (“The theatre of Africa”).
As an agency of the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture the core mandate of the SAST is to provide access to performance spaces in which the performing arts sector creates productions that are watched by diverse audiences. Theatre-goers are spoilt for choice in the diverse array of theatre productions presented by the SAST. Live performances are presented in five fully equipped theatres and other performance spaces which include an amphitheatre situated at a secondary location in the Silverton area of Pretoria. Productions are also presented online through the SAST YouTube channel which streams theatre productions to audiences across South Africa and internationally. Theatre spaces are available for hire by artists that want to stage their creative works, for theatre audiences or for recording purposes.
The SAST social media pages on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are updated regularly with the latest theatre news including announcements of new productions for artists to participate in. Audiences and artists are encouraged to regularly visit the SAST social media pages and enjoy the best of African theatre the continent has to offer.
