Proposed School Calendar For 2022 Academic Year

The 2022 school year is not as far it might seem. In fact, the Department of Basic Education has already started planning when the school year will start and end by releasing a proposed calendar for 2022.

The proposed calendar for 2022 shows different starting dates for schools in different parts of the country. Schools on the inland provinces will start on 12 January 2022 and schools in coastal provinces will start on 19 January 2022.

This is later than the proposed starting date of 27 January 2021 for learners.

The school calendar for 2021 has not yet been finalised by the Department of Basic Education. Following the many adjustments made to the 2020 calendar, the department hopes to catch up on lost teaching time.

In 2020 alone, public schools lost 5 weeks of teaching time, this forced the department to think of ways to make up for this difference.

This is when the department decided to trim parts of the 2020 curriculum for all grades except grade 12.

“All teachers know that catching up on lost learning, or learning recovery is not an easy, quick activity but requires a lot of dedicated time. This will include a concerted effort by both parents and teachers and will need to extend into the 2021 academic year,” said Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.
